Are there any membership fees?

No way. Good People Guide is completely free. You shouldn't have to pay for this kind of info. You don't charge your friends for recommendations, do you?

How objective are the reviews?

We don't accept any kind of kickbacks in exchange for good reviews, prominent placement on results pages, etc. And most of the people using the site are good folks like you.

What is the Member Trust Rating?

When you read a review, you can rate how much you trust it. This encourages members to take their time writing good reviews and helps flag any phony reviews that might be posted by contractors. The better your reviews, the higher your Member Trust Rating, and the more clout you have on Good People Guide.

How do I write a review?

Go to Review a Contractor. Take a deep breath. And really think about your experience with this person, from start to finish. Sure they made a few mistakes, showed up late, the usual. But relatively speaking, were they good? Did they get the job done well—within a reasonable timeframe? State as many facts as you can and try to say one good thing about the contractor, even if they were awful. Most importantly, show off the work and post some pictures of the project—before and after is ideal.

What if I can't find a contractor in my area?

Contractors often work outside their home base. For example, a contractor in Westchester may come down to Brooklyn for a job. And one from Brooklyn will probably do a job in the Bronx. So if you see someone you really like, give them a call and see if they'll help you out.

What if I don't see the kind of contractor I'm looking for?

If there's something—anything—you'd like to see on that list of specialties, email us here. We plan to expand the types of people you can review.

Do I really have to add photos to my reviews?

We're not going to force you. But it's super easy to add photos. All you need is a picture saved in a "jpg" format. Photos let you show off all that hard work, good work, and of course the bad work.

How do I delete or change one of my reviews?

You can't delete or edit your reviews. Here's why: if a contractor started out lousy and improved a few months later, people should see that progress. However, if the project took a significant turn for the better or worse, you can access that review via your profile page and add a follow-up comment to the review.

Can I change my review if my contractor fixes the issue?

If a contractor goes out of his way to resolve an issue, just go to that review via your profile page and click "Post a Follow-Up Comment" and it will be added to your review.

Can I put a link to my review on another website?

Absolutely. Spread the love and good knowledge!

Can I review the same contractor more than once?

Yup. After all, you could use the same person twice and have a different experience each time.

Does Good People Guide delete or edit reviews?

Other than editing all the potty mouths out there and removing inappropriate language, we don't change the text of published reviews. And we don't take reviews off the site unless a review or its author is found to be in violation of the Good People Guide User Agreement.

When will Good People Guide list contractors in my area?

We're just getting started. If you want us in your area, let us know here and we'll let you know when we're in your 'hood.

Why should I say whether or not I trust a review ?

Most people have a "sixth sense" for spotting a fishy review. So if you read a review and it stinks, you can let other people know and influence that member's Trust Rating. This helps weed out the members who are actually just contractors trying to advertise their business, and helps the good people really stand out.
