citymom asks:
I was looking to get some plants and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I have a north exposure that is fairly bright but no direct sun. Something hardy... I've killed many a plant before. thanks!

I have something called a "prayer plant". It's on the smaller side and doesn't need a whole lot of light.

Aloe Vera plants work well in city apartments. They're quite hardy and need limited maintenance. There are about 200 species giving you a variety to choose from. Plus, if you get a cut or sunburn, they're a natural healer!

I assume you mean perennials for the exterior of the house, as opposed to indoor plants?
If so, I recommend Pieris Japonica, which is not only hardy, but evergreen here in Zone 6 (Westchester). In the spring it has nice flower "horns" in white, and the new growth comes in a pretty red color, turning to green as it grows in. It's a great small to medium sized foundation planting that needs very little care and works perfectly on my own north-facing foundation walls.
Hope that helps!

go for a chic snake plant...also known as mother-in-law's tongue. low light, water every other week, etc. just place it and ignore it...like your in-laws!!

Mother-in-Law Tongue is right. Great plant, good looking and you can't kill it. Just don't over water it, let it dry out between watering's.
